Silkie chickens are one of the most unique and beloved chicken breeds in the world. Known for their soft, fluffy feathers that feel almost like silk, black skin, feathered feet, and gentle personalities, Silkies are often described as the “lap dogs of the chicken world.” Originally from Asia, these charming little birds are treasured more for their companionship, beauty, and exceptional mothering abilities than for egg production.
Silkie
Egg Color: Cream to light tinted

Eggs per Week: 2-4 eggs
Eggs per Year: Approximately 100-150 eggs
Origin: Asia (believed to have originated in China)
Egg Laying Ability: FAIR lay smaller numbers of eggs but are valued for their personality and broodiness
Broodiness: EXCELLENT famous for being some of the best mothers among chicken breeds and will often hatch and raise chicks, even from other breeds
Meat Production: POOR small body size and primarily kept as ornamental and companion
Cold Tolerance: FAIR fluffy feathers lack the structure of normal feathers, so they do not repel water well and need protection from cold rain, snow, and wet conditions
Heat Tolerance: FAIR can struggle in extreme heat because of their dense fluffy plumage; shade and good ventilation are important
Predator Evasion: POOR feathered crests can limit vision, and their small size makes them more vulnerable
Foraging Ability: FAIR enjoy exploring but are slower and less efficient foragers than many standard breeds
Tolerance for Confinement: EXCELLENT adapt very well to smaller spaces as long as they have clean, safe housing
Temperament: Extremely gentle, sweet, calm, and friendly. Many Silkies enjoy human interaction and being handled

Our Experience at Marusyna Farm:
Silkies bring a little bit of magic to our farm. With their fluffy feathers, tiny size, and sweet personalities, they almost look like they belong in a storybook. They are gentle, curious, and always stand out in the flock. Our Silkie has shown us why this breed is so loved - they are not the biggest egg producers, but their charm, beauty, and affectionate nature make them a special part of Marusyna Farm
