Buff Orpingtons are one of the most beloved heritage chicken breeds, known for their beautiful golden-buff feathers, calm personality, and excellent all-around qualities. Developed in England in the late 1800s, they are often called the “golden retrievers of the chicken world” because of their friendly, gentle nature. They are valued for both dependable egg production and quality meat, making them a wonderful choice for family farms and backyard flocks.

Heat Tolerance: FAIR heavy body and dense feathers make hot weather more challenging; shade, ventilation, and water are important

Predator Evasion: FAIR calm and large birds, but not as quick or alert as lighter breeds

Foraging Ability: GOOD enjoy free ranging and exploring

Tolerance for Confinement: GOOD adapt well to coop living but thrive when given space to roam

Temperament: Extremely gentle, friendly, and calm. Often one of the easiest breeds to handle

Aggression Toward Flock Members: VERY LOW usually peaceful and easy to integrate with other breeds

Noise Level: MODERATE hens are generally quiet, while roosters have a typical loud crow
