Bantam Cochins are the miniature version of the beloved Cochin (one of the fluffiest and most gentle chicken breeds in the world) packing all the fluff, charm, and sweet personality into a much smaller package. With their feathered legs, round bodies, and soft, teddy bear-like appearance, they are one of the most popular ornamental bantam breeds. Their friendly nature and compact size make them wonderful pets, show birds, and companions for families and backyard flocks alike

Origin: Developed from the Cochin breed, with bantam varieties refined in Europe and the United States

Egg Laying Ability: FAIR valued more for their personality and beauty than high egg production.

Broodiness: EXCELLENT exceptional mothers and are often used to hatch and raise eggs from chickens, ducks, quail, and other poultry

Meat Production: POOR small size makes them an ornamental breed rather than a meat bird

Cold Tolerance: GOOD thick feathering helps keep them warm, but feathered feet should be kept dry during snowy or icy conditions

Heat Tolerance: FAIR like standard Cochins, they appreciate shade, fresh water, and good airflow in warm weather

Predator Evasion: POOR small size, gentle nature, and heavy feathering make them vulnerable, so secure housing is essential

Foraging Ability: FAIR enjoy exploring but are slower and less active than many bantam breeds

Tolerance for Confinement: EXCELLENT adapt extremely well to coops and enclosed runs when given enrichment and proper care

Temperament: Exceptionally gentle, friendly, calm, and affectionate

Aggression Toward Flock Members: VERY LOW one of the most peaceful bantam breeds, making them ideal for mixed flocks

Noise Level: LOW hens are quiet, and roosters are generally less vocal than many other bantam breeds

Bantam Rooster: 1.6–1.9 lbs
Bantam Hen: 1.4–1.6 lbs

Common Colors:
Buff, Black, White, Blue, Splash, Mottled, Barred, Partridge, Silver Laced, Golden Laced, and many other recognized varieties

Our Experience at Marusyna Farm:

Bantam Cochins may be small, but they have huge personalities. Their fluffy feathers and feathered feet make them look like little balls of fluff waddling around the farm. They're incredibly sweet, easy to handle, and always seem to enjoy following us around. Two of our girls - Willow and Stella are best friends with our goat buck Bartek. At Marusyna Farm, we love how these tiny chickens bring so much charm - they may lay fewer eggs than larger breeds, but they more than make up for it with their lovable personalities!
